Why is a good night’s sleep such an important part of self-care and yet so many people aren’t sleeping enough?

Are you constantly tired all the time? Relying on caffeine and sugar to have enough energy to power through the day. Not getting enough sleep can impact your business, your health and more.

In today’s work environment people are working late into the evening, which impacts their work/life balance and utimately impacts the amount of sleep they get. Most adults need 7-8 hours of sleep however they’re only getting 5-6 hours a night. Sleep is important not just for energy, when our bodies are sleeping our cells regenerate and repair themselves. When you take care of your physical health, you experience increased energy levels and improved focus. Regular quality sleep contributes to enhanced productivity, allowing you to perform at your best in all areas of life.

Beside working late, there are many other things that can impact our sleep such as eating too late, drinking alcohol, watching television, scrolling on our cell phone, an uncomfortable mattress, light coming into the bedroom and the room temperature being too warm.

To improve sleep it’s important to follow sleep hygiene practices. Here are a few practices to follow:

  • Prioritizing a consistent sleep schedule and creating a relaxing bedtime routine can improve the quality of your sleep
  • Turning off all electronics (TV, phone, computer) at least 1 hour before bedtime
  • Installing blackout curtains/blinds so that the bedroom is dark
  • Avoiding heavy meals before bedtime, eating dinner at least 2-3 hours before bedtime

Making these changes can take time and you can ease into them. For example, if you normally scroll on your phone in bed, start turning it off fifteen minutes before bed, then go to thirty minutes and then sixty minutes.
